For all guitarists who like multiple genres of music, here’s a survey…?

Question by American Guitarist: For all guitarists who like multiple genres of music, here’s a survey…?
First off, what was the first genre of music you first loved? Then, how did you start to like other genres of music? Through your guitar teacher, through realizing that your favorite guitarist could play that specific genre or what?

Here’s an example, as well as my answer:

I first loved rock–Badfinger and other classic rock bands. Then, I started to get into the blues, after seeing Buddy Guy, B.B. King and Tommy Castro live one year. After I was into classic rock and blues, I eventually started to listen to Scorpions, Whitesnake and a few other 80′s metal bands and started to get into metal (not just 80′s metal–but some newer metal, etc.). Eventually, my brother started listening to country radio–when rock radio started to get too repetitive. I soon started to admire great guitar work of guys such as Brad Paisley (who’s now my favorite guitarist), Brent Mason, Jerry Reed, Chet Atkins, etc. From country, I even started listening to bluegrass, after getting into mandolin and learning a bit of mandolin. Of course, it wasn’t until after hearing a Brad Paisley instrumental, “Time Warp,” in which he played multiple genres–country, jazz and blues–that I started to get into jazz. Now I like Mike Stern, Wes Montgomery and quite a few other jazz guitarists as well as other jazz musicians. I’ve also recently started to admire Western swing and stuff like that.

So, guitarists–how has your musical taste evolved since you first fell in love with one genre of music?

Classic Rock – like KISS, Stones, AC/DC (Dont worry I progressed to better Music)

Other Genres? My taste evolved like music, Black Sabbath led to Priest and Maiden. They led to Metallica and Megadeth. They led to all sorts of thrash and then i went back to learn about the older bands again

My uncle is an amazing guitar player, being in multiple bands in his life (basically cover bands in the 80′s), he can play almost any Rush and Zeppelin song, also a lot good sounding stuff like Diary of a Madman – Ozzy, and Dream Warriors from Dokken. He has been the biggest influence on my music taste, the first riff I ever played was Day Tripper from the Beatles.

My first music album was The Beatles 1962-1966. I played it relentlessly. Then I bought Sgt. Pepper and the whole world opened up to me. I love classic rock, but steadily leaned more toward progressive rock, which incorporates many, many different musical disciplines in its composition. I became a hardcore Yes fan and Steve Howe and Chris Squire specifically (Howe being heavily influenced by Wes Montgomery). As my tastes developed, I realized that it’s all good. Good music is good music, no matter the genre. If it’s got chops, that’s all I really need.

My first love was punk/grunge ( Nirvana, Green Day, Offspring). I wanted to play an instrument and at first I though of bass or singing but my dad asked if I was interested in taking guitar lessons from a friend of his at work. He bought me an acoustic guitar and the guy taught me exercises and classical arrangements. But I got bored of that and also moved so I stopped playing after a couple of months. Around a year later I got into thanks to my parents ( GNR, Queen and Pink Floyd) and just listening to bands I had heard were good( Zeppelin, Sabbath, AC/DC). I decided that since the only instrument I had was a guitar I started playing and took some beginner lessons and also taught myself songs and just practiced a lot. I kept taking lessons so I could learn how to read music (which I kind of did) he also got me into Hendrix and B.B. King. But then I stopped taking lessons because I had school ( 9th grade, and Jazz band) so I was always busy. Plus a friend of mine who also played guitar thought we should start a band. At first we played hard rock ( just the 2 of us because we didn’t have the whole band) and then he got me into Slayer and I got him into Metallica. It’s weird because not only am I into blues, rock, reggae ( thanks to my dad who played Bob Marley tapes when I was a kid), pop ( My dad’s fav. band is The Police and and my parents like Rod Stewart, who they saw in concert also my dad bought Abbey Road when I was like 9) metal ( my friend and I also liked it) country ( my mom likes Faith Hill, Shania Twain, Carrie Underwood that stuff) but in Jazz Band we listened to a lot of Jazz and one of our assignments is listening to Jazz music. So I also like Wes Montgomery, Django Reinhardt, Les Paul, Ella Fitzgerald, Duke Ellington and Charlie Christian. So I just love all kinds of music because I have been exposed to so much. By the way I’m into Jazz and stuff but I’m like 15 so yeah you could say I’m like one of the only kids who listens to all this music. And right now I’m in a thrash/heavy metal band. So I’m still not done exploring music and getting better at it…

First I was into metal. You know, Glenn Tipton, Tony Iommi, Marty Friedman. Then my dad got me into classic rock. I idolized guitarists like Clapton, David Gilmore, Jimmy Page. But then I started hanging out with this kid (now my best friend) a lot more and he introduced me to the blues. And now I love my all-time favorite Stevie Ray Vaughan, BB King, and of course Buddy Guy. I love blues more than any other genre of music but I still love classic rock, and I’m still kind of into metal. But overall, blues is the genre for me. Once I heard Buddy Guy’s “Damn Right I’ve Got The Blues,” I was instantly hooked. You can’t deny it!

Started on classic rock, moved to thrash etc, got into jazz fusion, blues, and country, western swing, fingerstyle acoustic, classical, and now reggae and African guitar. But I’m still a metalhead first and foremost.
